The French conquest of Algeria took place between 1830 and 1847. The French colonial policy of the following years was based on a progressive territorial expansion in the North African and Subsaharan territories. At the end of the nineteenth century the Tuareg sed a fair resistance to French troops to defend their homelands of central Sahara. The clashes between the troops of the French Foreign Legion, which had developed and manned a strong series in the most remote areas of the Algerian territory, and Tuareg Berber troops were numerous and violent. The long struggles ended with the signatures of the Treaties of 1905 and 1917, where local populations fairs could not compete with the most advanced and modern weapons of the French army. Historical events inspired numerous novels and films. The most famous is the 1939 film "Beau Geste" taken from the eponymous adventure novel by P.C. Wren from 1924.
