This is my go to shellac!
I use this for all my wooden projects. Start with a 2 lb cut and then every day do a 1Lb cut. until I get the finish I like. Wait a couple of weeks sand with 2000 grit and apply a protective coat urethane/oil. A luthier friend only uses this on his guitars and they are works of art.

Not dissolving with unpleasant smell
I've mostly worked with waxed shellac flakes with no issues. Since those can limit the types of finishes you can use over them, I wanted to try de-waxed shellac. The mixture has been sitting in the jar for over 24 hours and still looks like little gelatinous globules despite using the exact same alcohol I used with the other types of shellac flakes. It makes me think the shellac might not have been stored as well as it could have been before being shipped to me. The bag arrived with no label aside from a green EcoVista sticker across the top of the bag. As for color, I only have the color of the liquid in the jar to go on. The waxed flakes I have are blonde. This was listed as super blonde. I expected the color of the liquid to be lighter. It isn't. In the jar, it looks darker than the blonde flakes I have. To be fair, some of that could be from the fact that it hasn't fully dissolved. Still, the color being darker is concerning. I've also noticed a strong odor from all of the EcoVista shellac types I've purchased. The smell reminds me of a very strong, floral, woman's perfume. Growing up, we'd have called it "granny perfume". It is not pleasant and that is putting it nicely. It is strongest on the EcoVista garnet flakes, but still present on this super blonde pack as well. I can't decide if I want to risk straining this mixture and trying to use it or just writing this off as a bad batch, but I think I'm going to try a different brand the next time I need shellac based on the smell from two different bags and the fact that this one doesn't seem to want to dissolve. If you want to know why I rated it 2 stars and not 1, it was an attempt to be fair. The flakes were ground to a uniform consistency and the package survived shipping in one piece despite the delivery being tossed on the ground by the road near my mailbox rather than put on the porch out of the elements. Maybe that's when it absorbed the moisture I suspect is preventing it from dissolving. Who knows? If it had dissolved properly, I'd have given it a 4 out of 5 taking a point off for the awful smell, but that isn't the case.

Great Sealer
Dewaxed shellac has a reputation in the woodworking world as a universal sealer. While it's not 100% compatible with all finishes, it really is a fantastic in-between layer for two finishes that might not normally adhere to one another. This shellac arrived pulverized into a powder, which is a good thing (takes less time to dissolve). It was clumpy, though, so it will take some elbow grease to get the whole thing back to a fine powder. The dry stuff has a much longer shelf life than pre-mixed shellac, so it's great for hobbyist woodworkers who don't go through gallons of finish every week. I do wish the bag was labeled, though. Mine was just packed into an unmarked resealable mylar bag.
