probably the best brand of large scale maps of this region

Good map, but a little dated!

Good general planning map. Very small scale, so limited details. Disappointed that a large legend covers southern Namibia as would have been useful to view that for planning rather than having to use a separate map.

This is the super detailed South Africa map. I get it because I was looking for a couple of dinky burgs which I couldn't find in the atlas or Google maps - and this map showed them. I've used ITM maps before and always been more than satisfied. This map is no exception. If you need a good map of South Africa, this is your first choice.

This large, colorful folding map appears to be on good sturdy (synthetic?) 'paper', and has what looks like complete and detailed information on roads, useful for drivers. (However, a reviewer on another site who had actually used it on a driving trip in South Africa complained about some mistakes. Since I haven't had that experience, I won't rate the road information.) Unfortunately, while I did want an overview of the entire country, what I was really interested in was the close-ups of 3 cities. While the maps of Pretoria and Cape Town look "okay," and the one of Cape Town does extend beyond the central city, the Johannesburg inset was disappointing because it covers only the downtown central business district. This makes it of almost no help in checking the locations of the greater Jo-burg area hotels, shopping malls, restaurants and other attractions in the suburbs and/or townships, even though those places are where a prospective tourist like me wants to concentrate. So now although I will keep this country map, I am ordering another one that is specific to Jo-burg. I hope it will provide the details I seek not only in downtown but also in areas surrounding the central city.
