Word mastery comes from intimate knowledge of language. In Word Nerds : Teaching All Students to Learn and Love Vocabulary, authors Leslie Montgomery and Margot Holmes Smith take you inside classrooms where they implement creative, flexible vocabulary instruction that improves their students' word knowledge and confidence. With support from literacy specialist Brenda Overturf, the authors developed a five-part plan to teach all students to learn vocabulary: Introducing new words in contextAdding related synonyms and antonymsEngaging in several days of active learningCelebrating new wordsAssessing vocabulary developmentThis easy-to-read reference explains how to plan, teach, and assess based on the latest research in vocabulary instruction and learning. After incorporating the authors' plan, you can be a Word Nerd too! Review: Amazing Resource for all classrooms! - I picked this book up on a whim. I hadn't heard anything about it, but was looking for a way to increase vocabulary comprehension in my classroom. I loved, loved, loved this book. So often I will buy a book and read it and think wow this is great but you didn't tell me how to make it work in MY classroom. Not this book! This book provides organizers, explicit instructions on games, classroom implementation, and a plethora of options to adapt to your classroom. Plus it provides information on differentiation for both primary and secondary elementary education classrooms. I have tried a few of these things in my classroom and my students loved them. I have not seen them so engaged and excited about vocabulary before. AND it does NOT require hours of preparation! This next year I am going to start at the beginning of the year and adapt it to all subject areas. I would recommend this to any teacher or parent! I can't sing enough praises for this book. Review: Amazing Vocabulary Resource - I am absolutely IN LOVE with this book. The strategies, games and activities for helping students to learn vocabulary are research based, practical and FUN. I mostly identify with it because their students are very similar to the students I serve. So you know it works when they are working with high poverty kiddos as well. I can't wait to put these strategies to use. The vocabulary journals, the vocabulary planner and the lanyards will all be daily staples in my classroom from now on. I am really excited to see the results I get from using these strategies with my class.

Very useful and practical information
Vocabulary is sooo important. The author doesn't spend a whole lot of time convincing most of us what we already know, but the author does put it in terms that make it easy for us to set up strategies on how to teach vocabulary. One of my favorite parts of the book, "Some concepts are unfamiliar, and the student is faced with learning both the concept and the words that describe it at the same time..." The authors walk us through great ideas, strategies, and words of wisdom to help us create word nerds in our classroom. This book isn't just theory, it's what is being used in classrooms right now and is working.

Creative Vocabulary
Great ideas, but some seem to stretch the realities of the classroom.

Given to Supervisors to Use at Our Sites
I gave this book to all of our Title I supervisors. Our organization is a vendor of targeted Title I eligible students in non-public schools from K-12 in a large midwest city. Most students come from families living in poverty and many are faced with undesirable circumstances outside of school. Almost half of the students we serve are ELLs and this book will help them learn English. For our other students, the games and activities are most inviting. It's great to see excitement about learning words.

Fantastic book
This book is fantastic! There are so many great ideas for teaching vocabulary in a fun way, but overall it gives great structure and clarity on how to integrate vocabulary instruction throughout your day. I have found myself coming back to this book multiple to look for ideas, strategies or refresh on the processes. I would recommend this for any teacher as a great resource!

Must Have for teaching the Common Core
Excellent book with specific detailed instructions on creating a vocabulary program that improves students' reading performances. HOWEVER, DO NOT ORDER IT ON KINDLE. The author has excellent templates and charts which are IMPOSSIBLE to read on a kindle. Well written informative book that is documented with researach based data.

Fun Vocabulary Lessons!
Engaging, informative, and fun to read. This book detailed several interesting vocabulary activities. The students participating in lessons described in this book seemed to have a great time, while also retaining the new vocabulary. My students will enjoy participating in these activities, and I'm interested in tracking their growth this year. Great ideas to implement in the classroom.

Mauvaise odeur
Je ne savais pas que je commandais un livre usagé. Bien que je n'ai pas de problème a réutiliser, ce livre sent vraiment pas bon. Il y avait une odeur de cigarette en ouvrant le colis. Je pense le jeter à la poubelle.
