Q: If the large button acts as an on/off switch (bypassing the timer functions), wouldn't this defeat the purpose of a timer switch for anyone unaware?

Holding it lets you override the timer and leave it on indefinitely say if you needed the light on while installing tile and didn't want to hassle with hitting the button over and over. Hitting a timed button or the power button returns it to normal timed function.

Q: so is there a way to activate the switch to leave it on until I decide to turn it off ?

The spec sheet reads it has HOLD but mine would not work out of box. The one I ended up with you turn the fan on then hold the switch and it stays on. Push switch again and it shuts off.

Q: Why does the description say its not recommended for a bedroom? I want to crawl in bed and a few minutes later my lights shut off!

The dark little rectangles that you see (seven of them) on the switch are blue leds that are on continuously. The main switch on the bottom of the unit and the delay time switch that you choose (I chose five minutes.) are very bright. The other five lights are dim. There is no way to turn them off. Your bedroom will be well lit up if this switch is installed in the room. Our solution was to hang a hook above the switch and place a hanging pot holder on it to cover the leds. I wish the manufacturer would have given the purchaser a method to disable the leds.

Q: Does it show how much time is remaining or does the LED only stay on for the original timer you set?

I set my timer to 10 minutes and then checked it after a little more than 5 minutes. It still showed the 10 minute timer light on and did not drop to the 5 minute so I would say it remains on the original set timer.
