Heartbreaking, Eye Opening, Powerful

A real tear jerker. Hearing the atrocities from a Holocaust survivor is unnerving. I was brought to tears multiple times as I felt and saw a glimpse of the horrible events that occurred. My heart breaks for all of the people that suffered, and the families that were torn apart for no good reason.

One of the best books I have read in years!!

No matter how many Holocaust books you have read, I highly recommend this one. Well written and you feel you are in the camps. I am so glad this gentleman decided to tell his story, as our children need to understand WWIi so it never happens again.

Title/Synopsis slightly misleading. Informative narrative

I would like to start by saying this was a very informative read. It was decently written, not juvenile but not sophisticated. It’s what I consider “regular”. This is a narrative/recount. Going into this I very much thought it would be a “story” set up based on the synopsis on the back of the book. The author did however do a good job at writing as if Mr. Kessler were writing/recounting it. The issue I had is with the title and the synopsis. I felt it was incredibly misleading. I choose this book fully expecting it to primarily focus on Buchenwald, Block 66, and the secret resistance. They were there but they were glazed over. It was a small part of the whole when I was expecting it to be the whole. It was disappointing in that regard, nonetheless I would still recommend it. I can’t deny that it was very explanatory and factual in other aspects. It was interesting to see Moshe Kessler and Eli Wiesel cross paths, unknowingly at the time. A line that really dug it’s way into me and caused me to sit back and think was “He had to fight everyday for his inherent right to exist.”There are some pictures of Mr. Kesslers family before and after the war as well as a few of his childhood home littered throughout the book. He wrote to Eli Wiesel after the war and included a picture of that letter as well. Moshe Kessler, holocaust survivor, and Linda Regev, author, worked closely together to document his story. I always think it’s important for the two to work closely together, hand in hand to properly portray, to the best of their abilities, the brutalities that occurred and the impact it had.

Heartbreaking and Hopeful

I saw the films from the Nuremberg trials in school as a youth, but this book is personal. We need to remember the individuals and be vigilant in our humanity. No person should ever be treated as a number or an animal. We all need to live in unity and respect for one another. We are all children of God. Thank you for sharing these painful experiences as well as your hope for the future. God bless you.

The Boy from block 66

This is a good book. Authentic with pictures of victims of the Nazi regime. It is sad how these families were treated. The courage was amazing. I was horrified with the way innocents were treated, housed and killed. The fear they had must have been and was terrible. My heart ached as I read this book.

Survival

Not as detailed and interesting as I thought it would be. I wanted to know more about his feelings and how they helped him to survive.

Such a terrible tragedy; such a beautifully told story!

I was surprised by how this book was written. I thought it was going to be more of a story with dialogue and development, however, most of the book is written in a way that you feel like the events are being narrated to you by a survivor. It's so well done, but it took me about a week to get through it. I'm quite a fast reader, but in this case, I could only read so much at a time. The subject material is heavy and dark and it forced me to slow down and absorb the impact of it through the eyes of someone who was actually there. I 100% recommend this read!

This book should be in every High school

I am elderly and found this book very interesting as I didn't know my history properly.I read the book and found it to excellent, and I feel personally it should be in every Highschool library, as a great many of us didn't know what really happen to these poor people.Make a great History book. But this is my personal view, others may find it disturbing or feeldifferent about the book.I found it made me feel Lucky to be Alive!

Deeply moving, beautifully told.

This account of a young boys experiences of the Holocaust is deeply moving and very sensitively handled. The horrors of what took place are unimaginable and then the heroism of 1 man that affected so many young lives is very heartwarming. I recommend it but be prepared for deeply shocking revelations of the face of evil unleashed in mans inhumanity to man.
