yes, it's removable! It is just to cover the pointy tip.

what sizes are the flower nails?

You can find it in picture 5. The dimension of the fairly large head are approximately 1.2 inches, 1.6 inches, 2 inches, 3 inches. The height of flower nail are approximately 3 inches or 2.75inches

Could flower nail also be used as heating core for cakes?

I'm not quite sure what you mean? How would you do that? Whatever you do though, you would need to remove the rubber tip on the flower nail. =)
