I played one, and the holes are extremely far apart. Is this true of all alto recorders, regardless of the material used to make one?

There is nothing unusual about the hole placement on this alto. I have played several and they are all about the same. I also play the tenor which is difficult to pick up and play if I haven't warmed up a bit first. Want some fun? Yamaha also makes a sopranino and it is SMALLER than the normal soprano recorder. It reads the same notation as the alto.

Does the alto recorder come in the key of c

You want a Soprano or Tenor to get the key of C.

Does the alto recorder come in the key of c

Sorry, ALL Alto recorders are in the key of F. The Tenor model is in F. The full range looks like this:Sopranino - FSoprano - CAlto - FTenor - CBass - F

I am debating between this "beginner" alto and one in the 300 series. I am an adult beginner. The 300's seem to be 2 inches longer. Does that matter?

It will matter. You will need to spread you fingers apart more on the longer instrument. It may have a better tone and be worth it. Up to you.
