Short and to the point...........
Haven't dabbled in aquarium fish in quite a while and this book is really helpful to get caught up. The authors go just deep enough without the content looking like an encyclopedia. Lots of pictures too! Why no 5 star? Because I haven't read any of the other books on the subject. Great book though.

Beautiful and thurough, but made it seem too complicated
This is certainly detailed, yet short enough to go through (at least on the surface) quickly. The photos are beautiful and I especially appreciated the detailed section on aquarium plant types and the one about fish. I definitely learned some things (especially things I had been doing wrong). It does make keeping an aquarium seem very difficult and daunting though, rather like a science experiment that could go awry at any moment with a wrong step. In the end it kind of discouraged me from continuing to keep fish after these are gone. I have had a very small tank for years, and had wanted to expand (and not have to fight algae so much) and add live plants...but nope. Dis too much, as they say. IF you are into the science of a good tank, are ready to spend time and money to fuss with it, then this might be just the book for you. It made fish keeping too complicated for me.

Small Book With Lots of Info
I learned a lot from this book. Bought an aquarium and had no idea you have to cycle it first. This explains the nitrogen cycle very easily for a newbie like me. Covers plants and fish good for beginners. Different substrates. Types of filters. Great book for total newbies and those with a little experience.

A good book to have

I absolutely love this book and found it very helpful in absorbing the information inside! This is a no nonsense, easy approach for newcomers to the hobby. The info is presented with images, charts, and diagrams galore! It really reminds me of the books I used to read as a kid, the series that explained what things were and how they worked. The approach to this book teaches you how to create an aquarium with no fuss. There are no extra frills or pressure to go above and beyond your cost means. Sure, if you can afford a CO2 tank system then great. But this books shows how it's possible to have an aquarium without that. Just a nice, basic low-tech aquarium. This method is way less daunting than other books I have read that left me overwhelmed. For the price of this book, you get such valuable info provided in an easy to learn manner. Highly recommend this!

It's definitely great for someone just starting out. I'd recommend buying this BEFORE starting a tank. It's all the basic info you need. I'm an experienced fish keeper and it was semi useful to me but it's mostly for starters.

This is for someone very new to fish keeping. Basic general information. Common sense information. I gave it a look over maybe twice. Good for a beginning as in never had fish before.
