Perfect tool for beginners
This is a perfect beginner's first wood-burning tool. It is light and nimble and easy to make curves and lines. One thing that could be improved is the grip design, a rubberized grip would be better as the handle does get hot at the hot end.

Overall Great Product!
I bought the Walnut Hollow Woodburner to make a few Christmas presents this past year. I am very satisfied with the product. The tool was advertised as the perfect tool for beginners, and that is a very accurate description of it. It was very easy to set up and use. While the placement of the on/off switch was a little awkward (almost right in the middle of the power cord), it did not make the tool any more difficult to use—just be mindful about where you set up to work. The tool came with 4 screw-in tips, and I found the easiest one to use was the flow tip. Some other reviewers mentioned that their tips broke off inside the tool, but I have had no issues with mine so far. I would recommend waiting until the tips cool in order to minimize the chance of this happening. There is most definitely a learning curve with the tool. Because it is a beginner’s type of tool, there was no temperature control, which was a hindrance at times—I had to be very aware of how long I applied the tool to the wood in order to maintain an even looking burn pattern. One minor drawback to the tool was the grip, which consists on very fine raised lines on the body of the tool behind the heat guard. It seems impractical to have such an uncomfortable grip on a tool that is meant for detailed (and therefore time consuming) work. However, any other person can modify their grip so that they do not squeeze tightly.Overall, I would say that this tool is great for beginners to see if they have an interest in woodburning as a craft. Its price lends well to experimenting with a new hobby, and the package comes with a good variety of tips to play around with. My tool has lasted a few months with no major issues; the minor one does not outweigh the overall quality of the product, nor does it affect how the woodburnings come out.

Love this Gizmo
Hi! I found this handy little tool to be rather wonderful :) The other reviews are true regarding it getting hot over time and that the cord can sometimes get in the way, but the latter is merely a position adjustment where laying it out on the table next to the project worked best for me. It is a woodBURNing tool, so you can expect it to get hot after the passage of some time. With the unit I have I found that it occurred a couple of hours into the project but that it seemed to correlate well with my taking a little break and looking over the progress of my work, so it didn't hamper me at all. But if that's when you find that you really are getting rolling with the project they sell rubber cots precisely for this reason that you might want to consider purchasing.Another point to consider is the smell. Some people may find the smell in their rooms/homes of burnt wood to be annoying, so work in a well-ventilated space (maybe using a fan?) or out-of-the way area (also great for concentrating). For the novice, I would suggest starting with bits of wood, even backyard scrap, to give you a chance to warm up (no pun intended :) ) and get the feel for how you handle the tool (its warmth, the different tips, the cord placement, the effects differing pressures exert) and the large or detailed marks you can create. That will give you more confidence and a better feel for how you handle each project. Then before you start on a project, get a feel for the wood grain of the project itself by working alittle on the back of the piece. Different types of wood burn differently. This is a wonderful craft, when you consider the enormous possiblities. Another thing to consider is that you don't have to stop with just the woodburning. This may sound strange, but I use professional grade colored pencils to add dimension to the piece (i.e. the woodburning adds permanence, color and tactile quality while the pencils add vibrancy to specific areas or the entire piece depending on what you want to achieve) then I spray the project with several coats of lacquer. Remember, it's YOUR creativity and YOUR unique style that you are bringing to an otherwise plain piece of wood giving it a whole new purpose. Experiment and allow YOUR inner artist to dictate - work on garage sale furniture, storage boxes, maybe add watercolors, or glue different pieces of material/fabrics/gems to parts of the project - whatever strikes your fancy. Woodburning is a true craft requiring both dedication and whimsy but unlike most crafts the pieces you create last a long time.Hope my review helped - hope it wasn't too long :)...

Good for beginners but wear a glove
I am a beginner and it’s easy enough to use. The handle got so hot though that I needed to keep taking breaks and then had to wear a glove to continue. There is no temperature control but the handle still shouldn’t get that hot I would think.

I purchased this woodburning kit for a creative grandson that has now used it many times. He is creating art that he gifts to others. He enjoys how well the grip fits his hand. It did not take long before he felt very comfortable using the various tips.
