I'm hearing about terrible orders, where is it made?

Olfa is a company based in Japan - all their products are made in Japan. They have been in business since 1956. They have a reputation for quality products. Not sure what you are referring to as "terrible" - we wouldn't carry their products if they were inferior or didn't work as presented.

What is this mat made out of. my mom has one and i am wondering if its esd safe?

Not sure what its made out of, but its some type of synthetic rubber/plastic. With all plastics, there might be off gassing at first, but that goes away very quickly. This mat is completely safe. If you that concerned, lay it flat in another room (or garage) for a day or two to get rid of any "smell". Tell your mom to stop fussing. Its not toxic.

If I were to use the grid lines to trace lines on regular printer paper, would the surface be too rough to write on?

The surface is actually quite smooth, so I don't think you would have any problems tracing lines.
