Much Better than Touch-up Bottle

I scrapped the front spoiler of my car on a curb. Many white marks too deep to remove with scratch repair, rubbing compound, etc. I've used the small touch up bottles before for paint repair, but they are not smooth and leave obvious paint lines on the repair. Decided to do a full spray of 1/4 of the spoiler with Victory Red Dupli-Color.Before doing so I watched several videos on auto paint repair. A few points that stand out from the videos. Preparation is key. The paint area has to be degreased and absolutely clean. Light coats are better than heavy coats. You need to use primer and clear coat if you want a professional finish. To that end, I applied two coats of primer, four coats of paint, and two coats of clear coat. The color matched perfectly and from a distance you would not know the spoiler had been painted. Up close, the painted area is a bit higher in texture due to the 8 coats of primer, paint and clear, but I wanted to assure the paint would not peel, which is a common paint repair problem particularly on composite nonmetallic parts. If you want a smoother finish, a coat of primer, two coats of primer of paint and one or two coats of clear may work better. The paint itself is an exact match. I did not use Dupli-Color primer or clear, but rather a name brand substitute. This worked fine. If you decided to take on this project, make sure you have a respirator. This paint definitely has more fumes than regular spray paint. Also, paint on a day when you can keep you garage door open. I don't recommend spraying outside as this increases the chance of overspray. Mask off everything you don't want painted and tarp your floor as the spray will descend on a wide area of the floor. With a little bit of patience, work and adherence to directions, anyone can do this project. My guess for a body shop to do a similar project would be around $500, as they would remove the spoiler and likely paint the entire spoiler. Time and labor add up even on small repair projects. I know this from experience as the same car was t-boned by someone who ran a red light and the repair costs was $18,000, most of it body and paint related. I paid $40 for all paint and masking tape. Save yourself some money and do it yourself.

Good paint

I have used duplicolor paints before and have had good results. Spray nozzle is adequate for dispensing paint in a good pattern. Finish is a dull flat finish and will require a clear gloss to obtain the gloss look you want.

Good Match, but Coverage Could Be Better

This paint match spray paint does a great job of matching the color perfectly, making touch-ups and repairs easy. It’s easy to apply, dries quickly, and provides a smooth finish. However, the coverage isn’t as wide as I’d hoped, so I had to use more than expected to cover the area fully. There’s nothing wrong with it—it’s effective and gives great color match. It just doesn’t cover as much area as some other spray paints, so plan on using more for larger projects. If you need a perfect color match and don’t mind applying a few coats, this is a solid choice!

Good stuff!

I bought a new bumper for my truck after denting and scuffing it up a bit, but the new bumper came in black, so I needed to paint it to match factory. This stuff claimed to be match factory for Ford, so I gave it a shot. Following the instructions, I first started by taking a Scotch Brite pad to both pieces (didn't have 600 grit sandpaper). Next, I used only a single can (bought two, but didn't even use the full can) and applied three light coats per piece with ~10 minutes of drying in between coats, then 45 minutes before applying the Duplicolor clear coat finish. Three coats with 10 minutes in between as well. Ive got to admit, the final product turned out great! I'm not sure if the color matches up 100%, but it's pretty close. Either way, I'm impressed by how it turned out. Definitely worth the money and it was pretty easy even for someone like me that usually hates painting. The drying time was quick and it looks good. The paint looks even and smooth. We'll see how it holds up over time, but I am impressed with the Duplicolor color match spray paint!

So far it has not worked, going to try again.

Followed instructions exactly and looks horrible. I'm fairly handy so I think I followed the instructions. First I wet sanded with 600 grit sandpaper and that didn't do much. So then I wet sanded with 400 grit sandpaper and wiped the residue off with rubbing alcohol. The can says to spray parallel to the surface which doesn't make sense. In fact the video shows the company doing a repair and they sprayed perpendicular to the surface. The attached pictures show the top and rear of my 350Z. It looks blotchy and streaky! Before spraying on the clear cote, the surface felt gritty almost like sandpaper. So, after watching the company's video I'm going to start all over again. First, I cleaned the surface with their grease and wax cleaner. Hopefully that took off the clear coat. Second, I wet sanded with 400 grit sandpaper and then 600 grit. My speculation is that the paint adheres to the sanded area different than the almost bare metal or remaining painted surfaces. The paint arrives tomorrow so hopefully I get some guidance before making a mess again. The first 2 pictures are after my first attempt. Very blotchy. The next pictures 3)Wet sanding 4 hours after paint and clear coat...lots of residue 4) paint residue on hand 2 hours after on relatively low humid day in Florida 5)paint residue on hand 40 minutes after on relatively low humid day in Florida 6) A picture the next day...looks more blotchy than the first time
