Wholesome Baby Food Guide

Great read, even for moms the second time around!
I love this lady's website, but I'm really ADD, and I needed something in a more linear format because I felt like I was only getting bits and pieces. It's a very easy, quick read...I bought this book on a Friday evening, and had read through all the information chapters by Saturday night. (I have a 5 yr old and a 4 mo old, so its not like I'm sitting around doing nothing.) I purchased the Kindle version and I love that I can look at the table of contents and click the recipe I want, I can bookmark it, and I can also click to recipes and other information from the first 7 info chapters. You can also search on the Kindle edition, making your life much easier when you have that, "I know I read that somewhere..." moment, but your mommy brain just won't allow you to find it.The recipes are great and the information is all up to date. She also includes quite a bit of info on food allergies, which was important for me as the mom of a food allergic child. I love that the author organized the recipes by age range/stage, because its easy to look at the list in the TOC and click to pick. Her recipes in stage 3 also have some ideas that could easily be a family meal that you puree on the spot for baby. In addition, the author also gives you tips with each recipe, and many of them are time-savers such as baking your sweet potatoes when you bake your roast to make use of the empty oven space.I do have 2 wishes for this book: 1) that she would include more info on the advantages/disadvantages of the different types of food prep and storage, and 2) that she would have included a "guesstimate" of how much each batch will make. She does note that different people will come out with different portions based on the size of the fruit/vegetable and their prep, but I would have liked to have had a rough idea on how much you might have, like "makes about three 4 oz. servings" so you know how many freezer trays, jars, pouches, whatever ready to fill. I hate that feeling when you've filled everything and you've still got half a bowl left and nothing to put it in. You can go in and make notes, whether on the paper or Kindle versions, but it would just be nice to have a heads up for the first time.Overall, its a great read. I tried making my own baby food with my first, but she was such a picky eater and wouldn't eat anything except apples, chicken, and bananas. (Which is about all she will eat at 5...) This time, it's more of a concern since our 4 month old has already shown multiple food allergies with Breastmilk and formula, so it's going to be a necessity to ensure she doesn't have those substances sneaking into her diet. Speaking of formula, I love that this lady is not judgmental about breastmilk vs. formula. There are some of us that just can't unfortunately...and for most of us, it hurts our hearts that our babies can't have that wonderful gift, so the last thing we need is someone getting preachy and reminding us what kind of failure we already feel like.My hope is that we can start her off right with solid foods that are wholesome, homemade and nutritious!

Amazing resource for all things feeding baby and making baby food
One of the best things about this book is how the author writes the information regarding introducing solid foods and all the things that go with it and of course, the yummy, easy to follow recipes.Everything in this book is clear and concise and presented in an easy to read and very friendly manner.I am not bombarded with preachy "do this do that" mantras. I feel like a friend is talking to me and encouraging me and offering up super advice backed by experience that even pediatricians recommend.Introducing solids and menus and myths and charts of foods, allergies and even poop! The book presents information about changes in poop when you introduce solids (who would know that poop changes so drastically?)Best first food choices and more importantly, WHY the foods are good first choices - no need to guess why butternut squash is better than broccoli as a first food.Timing of introducing solid foods and how/why recommendations change.Advocacy of skipping rice cereal (with doctor consult of course) and choosing better, more nutritious and yummy foods.Menus and what a typical week of solid foods may look like.Stages - foods by age and stage and how/when/why to move on to texture, chunks, spices etc and so on.Recipes for Baby Food and Big kid food too - I love that there are super simple introductory recipes for when baby is first beginning to eat solid food. There are also yummy and creative combinations so baby's tastebuds are never bored. I also love that there are easy to prepare recipes for all ages and stages, including for toddlers.FAMILY MEALS!! One of the neatest sections is the recipes for "family" meals and how you can take each food item and create baby's food too! While these recipes dont make up a majority of the recipes, they give you the greatest example of how easy it is to make baby food from YOUR food. This is by far the most informative, one-stop baby feeding cookbook that I have gifted and wish I had bought this for me a several months ago but alas, I was swayed by pretty photos :(

Love this book!
I purchased this book after spending some time on the Wholesome Baby Food website. I really wanted to make my own baby food but was apprehensive about the time involved. As a working mom, I don't have a lot of spare time these days. This book gave me just the push I needed and I am so happy I decided to go for it. It really does just take an hour or two each month to make tons of delicious baby food! My son has happily eaten everything I've made so far-- even the green veggies. And the savings can't be beat! The first batch of food I made cost just $9 and it lasted thru the first month that he started solids. Compare that to the pouches of organic baby food at $1.19-$1.49 each, and it's a no-brainer! I also loved the wealth of information in the first half of the book before you even get to the recipes. It's only been 2 months of solid food and I've pulled this book out dozens of times. I will be recommending this to all of my friends! On a side note, I use my Magic Bullet to puree everything and then freeze it in ice cube trays. There are some great (and cheap) Rubbermaid ice cube trays that nest inside each other for storage, but if you reverse the way you stack them, then they stack on top of each other for freezing. I have 9 of them so I can do one big round of baby food making and then put the trays away until next time and they hardly take up any space at all.

Excellent book, absolutely packed with great simple ideas that work, just what I needed. Recipe books normally are full of ingredients I wouldn't normally have in the house, but this is for every day people, who eat every day food. A lot of thought, love and care has went into this, with all the nutritional information including clever little tips. Recipes range from first foods to foods the whole family can share. Every house with a little one, should have this book. Life saver when short on ideas.
