Built like a tank, works flawlessly
This is a heavy, well-built blue ray player. Haven't tried a 4K blue-ray yet, but bought it to be future-proof in case I start collecting those. Regular blue ray plays flawlessly including UHD which looks great on our TV. The menu system is decent--- let's be honest, no disc player has an apple-like user experience -- but it's better than most. I played a european-region DVD (Notre Dame on Fire -- great docu-reenactment) and it just worked, I didn't even have to go through the region-change process. Finally, this is built like a tank. It's heavy, metal, pretty big. Not your all-plastic junk that will break.

Truly Region Free and works perfect!
I was skeptical cause of so many reviews various places, but this thing works perfectly.I'm a horror movie collector, and spent some time in the UK. While there I bought some Dvds not knowing of region codes at the time. So imagine my surprise when I came home and realized they wouldn't work in any of my players. If you google Region Free Blu-ray player, this is one of the first choices. Not on here though it recommended best buy, but the same model. I checked the specs and it didn't say all region, but it didn't say it wasn't. Also as far as formats, it plays everything under the sun so I figured it would work. Nope! So I took that one back and found they only way to get the region free models was thru stores that mod them.I actually found this stores actual website before finding the Amazon store. I had some questions and their customer service was very prompt and informative. They assured me it was region free, and they were right. It plays all region dvds with no settings adjustments. To switch to region A, B, and C it there's an easy to follow instructions sheet to use with the remote. If you have any issues with any kind of playback error, you can reach out to them at any time for support. Would definitely buy again and recommend you do as well!

Not a Happy Camper
Just tried to play a Region 2 DVD and got "Playback prohibited by region code" message. No instructions inside box on which color represents which region, but I tried all 4. Power off, Yellow, Power On, DVD Icon on screen, Play, Error Message. Rinse, Repeat.Quite possible I'm doing something really stupid, but my previous Sony Region Free always worked without issue. Not happy that I'm looking at returning this, but will.

Works wonderfully. Finally a true 4k experience.
So far no freezing or skips. In fact, this machine plays damaged discs that my old Blu Ray player did - or could not play.Let me also reiterate for those of y’all, that may not know: the 4k picture is truly better than any other small screen. If you are streaming, you are not truly seeing the beautiful crisp depth that a hard copy 4k disc can deliver. To get this you will need a 4k tv, a high speed HDMI cable, a 4k Blu ray player and a 4k UHD Blu ray disc. For those of us that care about picture quality this is the only way to go. For those of us that care about streaming censorship, or streaming availability, then hard copies of your favorites is a great investment.

Concerned about the region free not being factory
I purchased the Sony X800M2 as its said it was Region Free. Nowhere on the box is it printed that is is region free. There is a sticker stating its Region Free, Inside the box is a printed note. It says "Please note these players have been opened only to be modified for region free capability, they are brand new players. Please contact dvdblurayworld@gmail.com for any questions." I paid an extra 100 bucks for this to be region free. and this appears to be modified by the seller. And the box says the model is UBP-X800 not just X800. I may return this pending what I find out.UPDATE: I called Bombay Electronics to discuss this. Got a voice mail that said "This mailbox is full" and hung up. So I called Sony. Here's what they said. Sony does not see a region free player in the U.S. The region free player Sony sells outside the U.S. isnt much different. So dealers open the unit, make a modification and then sell it as region free. While I haven't tried the region free function yuet, I have watched a Bluray movie with it and it worked fine. Internet also connected easily. Have not tried all the other functions. Will do so and when I do i will update this. To be fair, I emailed Bombay Electronics and they did call me back but I had already talked to Sony by then. Lastly, Sony said they would honor the warranty but if i had a problem with the region free part, they would not. Bombay claimed they would.
