Great for kids learning basic map & compass skills
Bought several to teach our Federation of North-American Explorers group orienteering. This is a good basic compass.- A little big for the younger boys to easily hold in 1 hand comfortably but good for older boys, adults, etc.- The lanyard is a nice-to-have to avoid having to hold or put in pockets when you want it close by but don't need it at the moment.- Helpful to measure distances on a map, to enhance the value of learning the map-and-compass skill by the boys.- The display is easy to read, and the needle is fully colored Red to point North (vs. just a dot on some other compasses I have seen).- Does not handle declination, but that was beyond the scope of our lessons.- Watch-out!! Slow to get it accurate as the needle moves a lot before settling. Also sensitive to other magnetic items and may not be a perfect read.I have recommended that each of our boys buy 1 of these for their day pack as one of the "Ten Essentials of Hiking!" A good item to have handy at a good price.

LOOK GREAT BUT THEY ARE NOT ACCURATE
Why did you pick this product vs others?:I bought 6 of these to teach a class on map reading and orienteering. They look great online and they reminded me of compasses that we used in the Boy Scouts. I sat all 6 on a table and only two actually pointed north! The other 4 each showed north in a different direction. I would not trust their accuracy and they are therefore worthless as a compass.

Good for the money
These are inexpensive, decent compasses. I used them to teach orienteering to a group of children and they worked well for that. The needle got stuck on a few of them occasionally, but you could shake them and get it on track. I wouldn't actually carrry one of these, but they were fine for what we needed.

Scout leader training
Work well in the group environment working a compass game.

Does not function; needle does not spin freely and is imbalanced
The needle does not spin freely and is not balanced, thus the compass does not function correctly. The needle can sometimes be jostled free enough to try to turn north, but it binds again so it cannot be trusted for accuracy. Don't waste your money; this isn't even a good toy, much less a functional tool.

Not very accurate
They are OK, good for the price but I feel like usually they’re not giving me accurate readings. I tested a couple times and it usually just feels a little bit off. If you’re looking for a precise would not recommend.
