Awesome
The wiring is a little funky, but once you figure that out, it’s a really nice sensor. My FRC robotics team has been using it as a break game this year very successfully.

Great for simple object detection in close proximity.
Purchased these for a fun work project where I needed to detect a cup. They are very easy to adjust and very accurate for object detection. The output pin stays high until an object is detected and goes low until it is moved out of range again. To reduce sensitivity turn the screw counter clockwise. It takes a while, don't worry. I pointed it at the floor and gradually made the necessary adjustments, you have to allow the light on the back of the unit to go off, make an adjustment, then move it towards the floor until the light goes on, rinse/repeat. If you just turn the screw it will not turn the indicator LED off. Image added for the wonky color scheme black is output, brown is 5V, and blue is ground.

The sensors work after we had to attach the ends to them. They are not like the photo. We purchased these because they had ends to them, but that was not the case, so we had to spend extra time at practice attaching ends to them.

5V object detection sensor that does not require a reflector but no connector as shown
This is a object detection sensor that directly determines the presence of a nearby object by detecting reflected infrared light. This is NOT a "break beam" sensor that requires a reflector opposite the sensor. The idea here is to adjust the sensor (via the tiny slotted adjustment screw on back) so that the object will trigger change in output (and status LED at the back). According to the label the range can be adjusted from 3 to 80cm. Sensor is NPN Normally Open (N.O.) output.Things to note:This sensor is powered by 5V only! If you want to interface to a 5V microcontroller like many Arduinos, this will work since you can power it from 5V. If you are looking for a sensor powered by a wider voltage range (e.g. 12V) you need something else. Remember than since this is NPN "open collector" output the sensor can only ground its output - you will either need a pullup resistor on your microcontroller input (or activate internal pullup resistors for inputs that support this).Unlike the photo, the sensor cable ends are bare tinned wires. There is no "dupont" housing/connector as shown in the product photo! On the plus side, the cable length is much longer than shown in the photo (approx 27 inches from body to tinned ends)The wire colors are standard for this type of sensor, even though they may seem odd (Black is NOT GND).Brown 5VBlue GNDBlack OutputSensor was labelled E18-D80NK. This fits in a 18mm round hole. There are 2 plastic nuts included to captivate the sensor. Using the 2 nuts you could actually have the sensor extend out of the hole if needed.Hope you find this helpful!

They work great
I wish I could have bought just one but they came in a 3 pack. You need a pull up resistor on the output but no biggie. I use a 3.3K ohm but anything between 1K and 10K would work I think.

Great for robotics
We got these for our FRC robotics competition robot to tell when game pieces were oriented correctly. It's completely tunable and works great!
