Little Legends: Exceptional Men in Black History (Leaders & Dreamers, 3)

I initially bought this book for my granddaughter. I didn't expect to see such a well written book about women of color in so many different professions!! This is a keeper for me and my grandchildren. I was literally astounded at all the accomplishments of women of color that I simply never knew. I am a grandma now and the book is fantastic for me as well as for my grandchildren. Bravo to the author!!!! Excellent pictures and information about each person in the book. Makes me very proud to have something positive for my dear grandchildren. The illustrations are fantastic. Good Book!!!!

I love the way this book is formatted! I find it so cute, it's an amazing book for kids and parents/adults alike, I learn something new and together we learn about more black men in history than school has ever taught me.Things to know:Every 2 pages of this book has a different historical figure, the first page including the name and span of life from birth year to death year with either whole paragraphs (or several) detailing the life of the person on a surface level and their impacts on history. The second page is an adorable illustration of the figure that I personally would say adequately captures the figures likeness.This book is long! It covers more than 50+ black men throughout history, however due to this the summary of their lives isn't in great nor deep detail. It is just enough information to have a general introduction or understanding of said history figure.For those wondering whether Martin Luther King Jr is included in this book- yes, just not on an individual page but instead on a page towards the end of the book that lightly covers other figures that we don't specifically touch on earlier in the book.The book is great to read to kids or gift to kids that enjoy learning about history if you want to broaden their knowledge of important people they very likely would not learn about in school, I can say for myself that while I've heard of some of the names in the table of contents, I didn't know about 90% of the names, which is sad but I'm not surprised. The education system in the US is lacking, and therefore already doesn't speak or teach enough about the history of black lives and how they contribute to our history especially when representation matters.Generally the comprehension age I would say is about 7yo and older, my son has a difficult time concentrating and may have a learning disorder and he was still able to understand the basics of many of the biographies, so for kids who can't sit still, need something to fidget with and lose interest quickly, I'd suggest focusing on 1 person per day so they don't burn out on information overload.Overall, this is an amazing book for kids! I know this book doesn't cover everything and everyone, but it's a start. I highly recommend it's sister book, "Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History"!

Luvvvv the thorough detail and good selection of women

I love that it involves tons of Bold Woman that I didn’t know about. I bought this one and bold black men in history. It was a great read to my child especially during Black History Month. Love the illustration as well. Great book definitely worth buying.

I love this book. Concise yet detailed and informative about each individual. As an African American Studies graduate and advocate, I leave this book propped up in my school counseling office as a resource for kids to see just what ingenuity, passion, and perseverance can do. With the hopes of instilling in them that they too can be a legend. I love that it has a legend outline in the background so that they can create their own legend. It reads for them to create a legend not pictured in the book, as there are so many that notAll could possibly be included; but I use it for students to depict themselves as legends and how they want their story to read to others.

This is definitely a book that can be read to any child and great for adults as well.I got this book for my 4 year old nephew. He won't understand it fully now, but he will soon realize how many opportunities that he has in this world. It isn't limited by where he comes from, his parents, skin color,etc., but he has a limitless amount possibilities for a greater future. One that can leave an remarkable impact.

This book is a beautifully produced piece of not only Black History, but American History! I love how the author features some of the African American heroes who receive less attention in scholarly works. The first 35 legends each have a two-page spread; the profile of the individual along with a familiar yet detailed illustration. While Harrison's figures have a similar look, she adds unique details that distinguish them from each other. Additionally, the background images add the perfect touch to bringing the story to life. This book is now a mainstay on my coffee table, and I highly recommend it for ALL children and adults who may be unfamiliar with the historical contributions of these phenomenal men! Children in second grade and younger will likely need assistance from adult readers.
