Great Knife
This knife is awesome. I bought it after becoming frustrated with how horrible the quality of stanley knives has become. It's very well machined. It has a easy to turn knob instead of a screw, which you can't drop or misplace because it is attached to the housing. The piece that holds the blade is also attached so it can't fall out, and it even has a magnet to hold the blade in place. The blade storage has a spring that holds the spare blades in place. The two pieces of the metal housing are connected by a hinge at the rear of the knife. They clearly put a lot of thought into designing this. You can open it, shake it upside down, and not have anything fall out. I bought 4 more because I like it so much. I have several different stanley knives and several lennox, this Tajima one beats them all and it's cheaper!

Excellent Utility Knife But the Blade Cannot Be Locked In the Open Position.
The build quality on this knife appears to be top-notch. It's very solid and the blade extender/retractor works very smoothly. The blade can be installed one of two ways - so that it extends fully for deep cuts or extends only a little for shallow cuts such as when opening boxes. There is one item to note. This knife does not have a feature to lock the blade in the open position. Meaning, the thumb has to keep applying forward pressure on the extender/retractor at all times during a cut. This may limit the way the knife can be held for various types of cutting operations where you may want to switch the grip on the knife. If you are looking for a knife that locks in the open position, this is not it. If you don't need that feature, this appears to be an excellent choice.

Poor workmanship.
I have had two of these over the past 5 years. The latest one I bought only lasted about two months before the screw constantly came loose and the blade would slide through the bottom assembly and cut me once. Would stay away from this knife!!!

Nice but not for daily use
The quality is really high and I like the weight to it. But. After two weeks of use the screw stripped out and the blade storage is trash. Think it's a case of trying to reinvent the wheel. I'd recommend for a knife that you might use every once in a while but not for commercial daily use

Best utility knife I have ever used
Best utility knife I have ever used. The only two things I dislike are the protective bump on the bottom of the knife as it catches on things like insulation and the screw thing in the center of the knife that allows you to change blades unscrews as you use the knife. I have mostly gotten used to tightening it (without thinking about it) as I use the knife now, so it is not that big of a deal, but if the manufacturer could remedy this somehow it would be appreciated. Maybe a lock for the thumb screw?Otherwise I have never seen a knife with a retractable blade that is this strong. Even when cutting drywall and cement board I have never had a bad pull out!I now own at least a half dozen of these.

High quality utility knife.
The phrase "fit and finish" comes to mind when you first hold the Tajima VR-101.Turn knob is easy to operate with a hard stop to avoid over tightening.Tolerances are noticeably tighter than most other utility knives. It is slightly heavier than other utility knives, but a none issue due to it's size.Quality is abundantly evident. This is my new favorite fixed blade utility knife.I highly recommend this item. The only con I have noticed is that the knob turns easily and manages to undo itself.I turn it closed and continue.

Shame on Tajima
I am disappointed with this Tajima utility knife. I'm a professional Carpenter who does industrial construction work. We need tools that are tough and withstand the rigorous day-to-day operations that we put our tools through to get the job done. I liked this utility knife, however the two complaints that I have is one, the hand screw would come unscrewed too during my regular tasks and the second one is that I dropped it from about a 10 foot drop and the set screw broke off and ruined the whole knife. This should not be considering this knife cost twice as much as other knives that I have used and are still holding up even after 10 years of service. Yes I did drop the knife, but industrial tools should withstand a drop and the manufacturers should know that this does happen periodically. I have had this knife two weeks to the day.

Cutter Tajima VR-103

JUNK
never owned such an expensive low quality product, the finger tightener wouldnt get tight enough to keep the blade in place and it came loose. Used it once and then the second time i tried to gently tighten the knob with my pliers and it broke. JUNK

Over priced knife looks and feels good, in reality isn't.
Extreme solid knife, love the weight it has and how solid feels,Update: after a few days of use, the knife falls off a shed and the mechanism for opening/closing the knife is completely busted and no longer works.
