Perhaps a shallow hole (2.5 inch) for planting these.

When reading reviews I find it helpful when reviews contain the location: I am in Northwest Houston and I’m trying an experiment with the zoysia grass. My yard has pretty decent top soil but like most of Houston I also have slippery grey bayou goo clay under neath most of my yard. We have same weather as most of Florida but we don’t have their sandy soil. I used the 3X3X3 yard butler sod cutter for this project. I have a couple places that are high traffic areas that Saint Augustine will not grow. 95% of my yard is fairly healthy and vigorous St Augustine. However in the 5% area have a huge problem with various weeds in this area including nutsedge. In this test area I’ve noticed that the plugs I planted in more shallow (2.5 inch )hole have really taken off over the past 10 days the ones I planted at ground level 3 inches deep aren’t growing as aggressively. I also noticed that these plugs Come with REALLY sandy soil. The reason I had to plant them higher was due to a hidden concrete barrier for my Pavestone patio. I was concerned that the shallow hole wouldn’t work but to my amazement the runners have taken root and the plugs seam much bigger in 10 days! We also had non stop rain from the beta storm so that probably helped. The barefoot test. While my plugs a still taking root I want to say: This stuff is much nicer to walk on than St Augustine. I hope it spreads! The big questions I now have are the following:1. Will this grass suffocate weeds like nutsedge and others?2. Will it be able to compete with wild Bermuda grass and St Augustine?3. Will it look bad when we get a cold snap?I figured i would try it out in a small area to see what happens. Based on your feedback I will try and update this review. Hope you found this useful.

Came in Healthy!

I like that these are larger plugs and took well during the rainy season.

A Little Too "Heady" But Usable

They were intact but the grass was so long with lots of old dead grass that they left huge unsightly "bubbles" when planted. Picture shows what I mean. These will be able to be trimmed off eventually but the quality is not as good as some others I have bought on Amazon. The price is okay and they arrived quickly.

Healthy Plugs

Only complaint is a few of the plugs appeared to have a mix of a different type of grass. I've ordered these five different times, and I have about an 80% success rate of plugs established and spreading/growing. That's pretty good for someone that can kill a cactus.

Beautiful grass!

We bought this to help fill in some dead spots in our St. Augustine lawn, which isn't really thriving in some areas. The plugs arrived in great condition, and due to some other yard work going on, had to wait a couple of weeks before planting. I kept the plugs watered and they were still beautiful when we planted them. I have been closely monitoring them in our yard and after 2 weeks, the grass is already growing and has some seed heads. I am very pleased so far, and will probably buy some more in the near future.

Way better than having weeds

If I could give these a higher rating I would. I planted zoysia plugs (not form Amazon) 7 years ago in my side yard. Those plugs were 1/4 the size of these. That side yard had been covered in weeds. It’s now like a golf course. I love how zoysia creates a thick mesh so unwanted weeds and crabgrass can’t grow (I don’t believe in using chemicals on my yard). Over the years my front yard has filled with crabgrass and all kinds of weeds, so I’m planting these plugs and hope they grow faster then the side yard plugs. These were easy to plant in place of weeds I pulled out and have rooted quickly - despite our mini drought conditions this month. The only draw back is the zoysia turns brown over winter and grows back in the spring. I’ll deal with that rather than having all the crabgrass/weeds.

Dead within 6 weeks

Planted zoysia plugs in sandy soil in Hawaii and they spread like crazy. Planted these in the sandy soil in Florida and they were all dead in 6 weeks. Water of time and water.

Beware of crop seed in plugs.....

Bought these plugs to fill in a dead patch in my front yard. When they arrived, they were half dead, but I planted them right away and have kept them watered, so they are doing well now. I was very upset however when I saw spikes of a very tough, fast growing, crop type grass growing within the plugs. I have seen this type of grass in lawns before when people bought cheap seed. It grows faster and taller than the other grass, and if not pulled out by the root, it will spread throughout the lawn. Because Zoysia grass is so dense itself, it is hard to get the spikes of crop grass out by the root, so now I am worried it will spread in my lawn if I don't sacrifice the whole Zoysia plug. It is not in all of them, but it is in several, which is unacceptable at this price point. Based on that, I cannot recommend this vendor.
