how does this vacuum handle hair? It seems to do well with pet hair, but my hair sheds a ton and I need something that can pick it up!

i have a chi with short hair who sheds a lot. 
ODD!  the dog hair the DD picks up never goes into the vacuum cup but sticks to the outside of the vacuum cup.  so, the suction is hardly any.  i have the DD hand vacuum which has great suction.  but with hand held model, my back makes this not a good thing for floors.  i would like the DD handheld vacuum's suction  with a long handle and same light weight  as the DD stick.  combine best of both.

is any assembly required?

You have to put a couple of pieces together, but I wouldn't call it assembly. No tools are hardware needed. Just slide one piece into another.

Does it have a removable and replaceable bag?

It has a removable sock style filter.  It has no bag, the guts where the lint and dust is stored is hollow, like a small handheld.
