Otamatone: Touch-Based Music Sensation from Japan Borrowing the Japanese word for tadpole "otama" and "tone" for some fun wordplay, this theremin like musical instrument is for anybody. Despite its quirky appearance, it is not just for kids! Even teens and adults can enjoy the innovative design from Maywa Denki. No musical background necessary! You can hammer away at it like it was a keyboard piano or finger its stem like it was a recorder, there is no wrong way to use it!

Great Fun, Very Intuitive
I bought this pretty much on a whim, and I'm glad I did - it's great fun, and very easy to use. I've handed to it a bunch of different people or differing musical abilities, ranging from a 2-year old girl, to a professional jazz musician in his 40's, and everyone who's had a go has had the same reaction: a moment of confusion, followed by a couple of minutes of random noises, and finally something that resembles a tune. The Otomatone is very easy to use - you touch the black strip to make a sound, and squeeze it's head to create a "wah-wah" effect. high note at the top, low note at the bottom, and about 2 and a half octaves in between. The DX model has a few extra feature over the regular Otomatone. It's larger, for a start, and has 3 different frequency ranges, changeable via a switch at the back. it also has a line out socket, can be connected to a power supply, and is supplied with a strap.i would have given this item 5 stars, but it does have a few issues. The plastic the Otamatone is made from feels a bit cheap and flimsy, and the rubber "head" is a real dirt-magnet. the most disappointing thing is the line out socket. while it does work, the output is very low, and when amplified it sends a very noisy signal.Overall I'm very happy with this product, as is everyone else who has had a go! Like i said, if not for the slightly flimsy materials and the pretty useless jack socket, I would have happily rated the Otomatone DX 5 stars.it's 50% musical instrument, 25% toy and 25% mental :)

My thoughts on the product.
The product is not of the quality you would expect for a 34 pounds +4 delivery, the plastic used for the "stem" is quite low quality and seems very brittle, the connection between the part you press and the hard plastic is not done very well; pressing the head, it has piston-like design and when pessing it produces a cranky squeak sound, my children says "the mouth makes a clicking noise" ,an indication of low quality. But if you are only buying this for fun, in my opinon the initial 'hype' for the product died very quickly and saw it lying around the place in the house. If you are purchasing this as a instrument, i would tell you not to buy it, the sound is not consistant sometimes and breaks off, there is not much that you can do if you if you spend time learning it, just like any instrument.Delivery took a very long time because i was sent the wrong item and came very late than the intented date, but the customer service is alright i would say, they sent me a document to print off and stick to the wrong item and return, after that i waited a few more days before my item gets sent to me.Im my opinon, if you really want this product… although i haven't brought the smaller one, get that one first, i would think the quality would be either same or lower. If your just on the fence, i would suggest buying something else, for my suituation i could have gotten a pretty nice headset from hyperX or logitech g503 mouse which are all around the same price but much higher build quality.I may put an update on the longevity of the product if my children carry on playing with it.

Having a lot of fun with the instrument
Having a lot of fun with the instrument! The only thing that would have made it perfect is if I could practice with headphones in and that it would be silent for people around me. Other than that however it's great! :D
