Joseph A. Fitzmyer, S.J. explicates Paul's letter to the Church in Rome.

Fitzmyer covers Luke, Acts, the letter to community in Corinth, and the letter to the community in Rome. He has thought about these important components of the New Testament for a long time. He has taught on these works over many decades. As co editor, with Raymond Brown, of the New Jerome Bible Commentary, his knowledge is encyclopedic. The clarity of his exposition is what you would expect from a Jesuit. You might want to add the second edition of Gerald Stevens Acts: A New Vision Of The People of God, not for completeness, just for enjoyment. If you are studying theology just about anywhere you will read all of these titles. You will enjoy the endeavor.

Excellent

This is my first purchase of an edition from the Yale Anchor Bible Series. Delivery was excellent. Book in great condition. Definitely for those interested in thorough and scholarly analysis of the Bible. Some may be bored with comments on textual variations among manuscripts, or the discussions about translating and interpreting from the original Greek language, but I found it fascinating and informative. One easily understand the unending debates when such factors, combined with other historical references are considered. A keeper!

Detailed Commentary

Great commentary on Romans, but probably a little more in depth than the average layperson would want. Looks at individual words in light of the Greek from which they were translated. Interesting

candid

Pretty much knew what I was getting. Not youf typical commentator. Delves into "trouble spots" other commentators don't touch. Many classics quote this guy. I thought it was about time to read him for myself.

As always, Fitzmyer provides a thorough discussion of every element of his topic, this time it's the letter to the Romans, while still being incredibly readable. He also approaches his subject with an open mind, no agenda detected here.
