Great Book!

I purchased this book for my husband's 70th birthday after reviewing several others that were available on Amazon. He started teaching himself Hungarian a while back and loves, loves, loves the language and anything Hungarian. I have to say that he has been completely thrilled with this book and the fact that it not only is helping him with Hungarian verbs, but with nouns, as well, and various and other sundry things that are totally incomprehensible to me but are fascinating to him. He said that I picked out a great book and he loves it, so this is a definite 5 star product!

Hungarian language.

I had only a very short time to take a look at the contents of this book. The student I bought it for said he liked it-the way it presented grammatical learning- and took it with him.I did find an egregious error right at the beginning where the pronunciation of Hungarian letters is given. The 'a' in Hungarian sounds like the 'a' in the English 'gargle'. Not what the dictionary suggests, which is not clear or worse-a broken 'o' whatever that is-even if it is a typo- The 'a' in Hungarian is seemingly extremely difficult for non native speakers. So practice by saying 'alma' (apple) many times every day, and eventually you will master this important vowel. Once you got the Hungarian alphabet down pat, and its proper pronunciationthings will be a lot easier. It is not hard. Start at the beginning!

A useful quick reference

This book is a useful quick reference, but its explanations are brief and can leave a student of Hungarian wanting more if one is struggling to understand a new concept or grammatical feature of the language. I find the fact that the index comes before a number of verb tables frustrating as it is often faster to flip through the pages to find the section one wants rather than flipping through the end of the book in search of the index. The explanations are at times too brief to grasp the form and function of different elements of the language, something Carol H. Rounds' Hungarian: An Essential Grammar  Hungarian: An Essential Grammar, 2nd edition  does very well. Still, this book is a useful tool if you are looking for a reminder about the form of a verb or grammatical feature that you previously studied and already understand.

Wonderful, concise, useful handbook for all

Independent study of this book alone helped me jump from an absolute-beginner level class to and intermediate level in a summer intensive Hungarian language program. Even in the program it helped immensely. The simple sectioning of the book, and the to-the-point grammar rules lay down the basic framework of just about everything you need to know to understand much of every-day written Hungarian. I still go back to it frequently. NB: there are no exercises or lengthy "explanations", it simply tells you all the rules, but also contains useful and common phrases/vocab.

Pretty good for what it is.

This is a grammar reference, not a way to learn the language. It's organized well enough that I can usually find what I need quickly--much faster than pawing through a book that focuses on step-by-step language learning. Be prepared for linguistic jargon. Specific terminology is the only way to make a reference like this useful, but better definitions would really help. (How about a glossary?) Most foreign language grammar books are much longer, and this one would benefit from more fleshed-out explanations.

A Very Useful Book

I was looking for a book that gave a concise and clear overview of Hungarian Grammar with particular emphasis on verbs. This book is just what I was looking for, and it has the added bonus of being readily portable; its not at all heavy or bulky, so you can easily take it anywhere with you for a bit of impromptu studying. It also has some useful lists of vocabulary at the end.

Succinct and professionally presented

I consider the book to be excellent, though the Hungarian language is as good as impossible. Just studying the first 10 pages of this makes it hard to avoid that conclusion. My Hungarian wife and I will have to re-think our retirement plans and maybe move to Portugal instead. The book itself is clearly a superb resource and I will continue to work with it.

Handy Grammar

This is the 2nd edition of the book--I have both. Very useful to check grammar points, verb endings. It's pared down so a lot of context is missing. But it means that it is light enough to carry in my bag.

Not at all what I needed

I was looking for a verb book, which this seemed to be, what with it being called "Hungarian Verbs". It's not. It's a very thin grammar book, and I already had a better one. It's laid out like a grammar book, i.e. incomprehensibly. There is an index of verbs, but nowhere does it show a fully conjugated verb, you'd have to scavenge through the book to figure out how to conjugate a verb. Not sure how good it is as a grammar, I'm not about to read another grammar book. I'm so aggravated.

Useful and good value, but sometimes annoyingly technical

Given the dearth of in-print Hungarian learning material, this is certainly worth the money. It'll be pretty hard for me to outgrow this book as it's rather technical as if written from one master linguist to another, in order to encapsulate the language rather than teach it.If you're learning Hungarian then do buy it. There's plenty in it to make it good value, just don't expect much hand holding if you're not familiar with advanced grammatical and linguistic terms.

Demystifies Hungarian grammar

Excellent, clear, comprehensive and concise. All you want from a foreign language grammar, in short. Starting with an excellent and elucidating section on verbs, the rules are made clear through neat and exhaustive tables. For learners, a great book for revealing some of the mystery of Hungarian grammar - for the more advanced, a superb reference for the bookshelf (and it's a fairly slim volume, so won't take up too much room, either!).

Hungarian Verbs & Essentials of Grammar

Miklos Torkenczy is an experienced teacher of Hungarian. So says McGraw Hill Professional. And it shows! For any Western European, The Hungarian language poses significant difficulties.'A practical guide to the mastery of Hungarian'. I believe this!

A good buy for a beginner in Hungarian with some experience ...

A good buy for a beginner in Hungarian with some experience with learning languages. The focus is primarily on the morphology of verbs and give a good grounding in that. The more phrasebook-like sections seem rather tacked on (a companion dedicated phrasebook might be more useful), but they give the book some of the qualities of a swiss army knife, and their briefness and economy is praiseworthy.
